Bay Plaza’s Open for Business
BRONX, NEW YORK, AUGUST 14- Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. was the very first customer at the new Macy's near Co-op City, which officially opened as part of the new Mall at Bay Plaza—a facility which has 780,000 square feet of retail space and is the first enclosed fashion mall in the New York City area in almost 40 years.
To fill 1,800 new job spots, Governor Andrew Cuomo's Unemployment Strikeforce partnered with Borough President
Diaz and the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation to help match candidates with the positions.
“To all the Macy’s family, on behalf of 1.4 million Bronxites, I want to say thank you,” Diaz said. “This is truly a partnership between the community, community leaders, people like Marlene Cintron, who is the president of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation; and, of course, government.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I just want to say this: of all of the brands that are being sold at Macy’s, in all seriousness, the number one brand, the most important brand that is being sold here today is that of the ‘New Bronx.’
“When Macy’s makes a decision to go somewhere, they don’t make that decision lightly. And so to invest in our borough, to give our residents better and more pleasant shopping opportunities, to give employment to our borough…but also to send a message across the nation that they’re coming to The Bronx, and they’re here in The Bronx, it shows that something good is happening right here.
“So for that, we all want to say thank you, God bless you, and let’s continue to move forward.”

31st Annual National Night Out Against Crime - August 5th

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 28- The 31st Annual National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime will be held on Tuesday, August 5th.
The 47th Precinct & 47th Precinct Community Council will be holding NNO activities from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Grenada Place between Ely Avenue and Laconia Avenue, across the street from the Precinct. This year's theme is “Respect Your Neighbors - Think Quality of Life!” The opening ceremony will be at 5:00 p.m.
Deputy Inspector Ruel Stephenson and Community Affairs Officers David Belle and Jay Soto have planned an enjoyable afternoon and evening for children and adults. Our elected representatives have been invited. There will be representatives at tables from New York City agencies, and other organizations who will be giving out valuable free information. Refreshments will be served. For children's activities there will be rides and games. There will also be entertainment for the community to enjoy.
This year's slogans are: Say No To Drugs, Help Unite Our Community, No All Night Parties, Talk to Your Neighbors, Love Your Block, Do Not Block Your Neighbors Driveways, No Loud Music, and A Quiet Neighborhood is a Good Neighborhood. Bring the family out, learn about crime prevention, and have fun at the same time.
So, what exactly is NNO? It is a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). The NATW is a nationwide organization dedicated to the development, maintenance, and promotion of community-based, law enforcement- affiliated crime prevention activities.
NNO is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods "celebrate" NNO with a variety of events and activities such as: block parties, cookouts, visits from local police, parades, flashlight walks, contests, and youth programs. An event doesn't have to be big or elaborate. It can be as simple as having a conversation in a neighbor's yard. The important thing is to talk to your neighbors and plan to get together. NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. More than 37 million people are expected to participate in various anti-crime programs and activities this year.
Remember, the key to participating in NNO is: turn your outside lights on, come outside to meet your neighbors, and participate in your neighborhood's special events. This way you can be a part of the nation's largest annual crime/drug prevention event on Tuesday evening, August 5th.

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 28- Police were hot on the trail of the gunman who opened fire on one man and wounded two innocent bystanders after an afternoon shooting on a busy street in Parkchester.
Police were called to 1525 White Plains Road at Archer Street at just after 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 27.
According to one police source, the intended target was an unidentified 21-year-old male who was shot in the knee and buttocks.
The unintended, collateral damage was a 40-year-old woman who was hit in the foot and a 60-year-old man who took a bullet in each of his legs. All three were transported to Jacobi Hospital and were expected to recover.
Police shutdown a portion of the block and many were not allowed to return to their homes until detectives examined the evidence left at the scene. Investigators examined more than a dozen shell-casings and a bloody woman's shoe-- left in the entrance to one of the buildings.
A young woman answering the phone at Little Treasures Daycare, directly across from the shooting scene stated that many people hang out in front of the buildings where the gunfire erupted, but could not say if any crimes or drug dealing were being committed.
The woman explained, "We're in the basement, so we don't see what's going on."
Police have no suspects at this time, but were believed to be looking at surveillance video from no less than three cameras pointed directly at the shooting scene.
According to the latest statistics available from the NYPD, there were 25 people shot between January 1 and July 20, up from the 19 people shot in the same time period in 2013.
Back on February 19, three people were also shot along Morris Park Avenue at White Plains Road after another brazen gunman opened fire, hitting his two teen targets
outside a discount store.
But the gunman also struck a 79-year-old woman in the hand, in the barrage.
