Kuroda Pitches Masterpiece

Yanks Defeat Texas, 3-0

(Photos by Gary Quintal)

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK, August 15- Starters Hiroki Kuroda and Matt Harrison engaged in an exciting pitching duel on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Kuroda was the superior pitcher of the night as he pitched a complete game victory over the Texas Rangers, 3-0. The win moved the Yankees 1.5 games ahead of the Rangers for the best record in the American League.
The Japanese native lived up the complimentary words uttered by Yankee skipper Joe Girardi before the contest, “He’s met our expectations definitely. He has pitched outstanding for us. Each start he really gives us a chance to win. He’s given us distance. He’s been extremely consistent. It’s what we expected when we got him. The one thing we talked about with Hiroki was this guy can really pitch and locate, and he’s done that.”
Kuroda thrilled the 44,533 fans in attendance by pitching no-hit ball through the first six frames. During that time, the only runners were Elvis Andrus, who walked in the first and Mitch Moreland, who walked in the third.
Andrus broke up the no-hitter with an infield single to lead-off the seventh. Josh Hamilton’s long fly to right and a wild pitch moved Andrus to third, where he was stranded when Nelson Cruz grounded out to end the inning.
Michael Young singled through the middle to begin the eighth, the second and final hit for Texas in the game.
After the contest concluded, Girardi’s words of praise for Kuroda were similar to those uttered before the game began, “It was probably our best pitching performance. I saw he was very good early on. It was pretty much fastball, slider to get ahead [of the batters].
The win was Kuroda’s 11th of the season. Girardi believes, “Realistically, he could have 15 or 16.”
When asked why he allowed Kuroda to complete the game, Girardi responded, “His pitch count was down [and] his pitches were still good.”
Kuroda, through an interpreter, responded to questions regarding how he felt when his no-hitter ended with the following words, “I feel bad; I let down all the fans. I had to regroup myself a little bit. Even if you throw a no-hitter, it’s only one win. The most important thing was for our team to win.”
Texas starter Matt Harrison handled the Yankees easily though 6.1 innings. Derek Jeter led off the first with a single to left field to raise his hitting streak to 10 games. The hit was his 3,243rd in the majors. Harrison gave up hits to Casey McGhee in the second, Mark Teixeira in the third and McGhee in the fourth.
Jeter, the last batter Harrison faced singled with one out in the seventh. Jeter, with 3,244 hits, needs only eight to tie Napoleon Lajoie for 12th place in the career rankings for hits. Of Harrison’s performance, Girardi remarked, “He seemed to get better as the game went on.”
Reliever Alexi Ogando gave up home runs to the first two batters against him. Nick Swisher followed Jeter with his 16th dinger of the year. Mark Teixeira, the next batter, blasted his 23rd of the 2012 campaign. Enough damage was done by Yankees batters that inning to ensure the victory.
The Yankees hope to increase their seven game winning streak over the Rangers in Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night as Freddy Garcia (6-5) gets the start against Scott Feldman (6-7).

Cougar Gate!

Could This Be The End For The Rivera Dynasty?

(Facebook photos of Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera with her boyfriend/staffer and another with an unidentified woman.)

By Robert Press

BRONX, NEW YORK, August 13- Could Cougar Gate torpedo the Rivera political dynasty? The fallout from a Facebook page showing Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera in skimpy clothing and talking about her boy toy have constituents wondering if the Morris Park pol’s days are number.

In addition, officials are looking into why the elected official put her “Hunky Babe,” on payroll for her office even though he worked full time for the Department of Education.

In what could be larger than the Congressman Weiner scandal, a Sunday New York Post article exposed a secret Facebook page that Bronx Assemblywoman Naomi D. Rivera had where she is just known as Daniela Rivera her middle name. The Post article says that the Facebook page is devoted to a man complete with dozens of photos of her in various poses with her “Hunky Babe,” who was put on her payroll as a full time staffer (according to NYS Comptroller DiNapoli's office, and Assembly records) while he was a full time teacher in Brooklyn.

The Post article also shows a photo of Assemblywoman Rivera dressed in skimpy clothes with another woman. The Post article continues to say that the man is now seeking a soon to be vacant City Council seat in Williamsburg Brooklyn. It is said that the man did not return calls, and the Post says that Assemblywoman Naomi D. Rivera denied that he had a no show job, but did not respond to requests for an accounting of his work and hours. The Facebook page in question has since been taken down.

We have been told to look into Assemblywoman Rivera's expense reimbursements, because we were told that she may have put in for expenses when she was not in Albany. We tried calling her office and could not get any comment by our deadline. We also called several of Assemblywoman Rivera’s supporters on the Facebook article, again not getting much more than no comment, so she has a Facebook page, and most people do. An interesting curve here is that early last week we were told by a colleague of hers that her father Assemblyman Jose Rivera was in Florida. We were wondering why her father, who also has a primary less than one month from now, would be out of town. We were told that he was at the home of a close friend resting from the stress of several things that has occurred the past two weeks. We called Assemblyman Jose Rivera's office and were told that yes he was in Florida, and was okay when we asked about his health.

There are people who now are calling for not only Assemblywoman Naomi D. Rivera to resign, but also for her father Assemblyman Jose Rivera to step down. The elder Rivera boasted on NY1 Noticias “Pura Polital” that among other things that he wants to run for the city council next year to increase his pension. A city council member makes up to $50,000 a year more than an assemblyman.

Soccer Superpowers Clash at Yankee Stadium

By Howard Goldin
BRONX, NEW YORK, August 9- Soccer fans flocked to Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night to see two of the legendary European superpowers, Real Madrid of Spain and A.C. Milan of Italy, meet in a friendly match.
Prior to entering Yankee Stadium, many in the large crowd had dinner at neighborhood eateries on 161st Street. Several distributed 4-inch commemorative soccer balls to its patrons. Dr. Cary Goodman, Executive Director of the 161 BID Business Improvement District), who spearheaded the project, commented, “We want everyone to enjoy this great soccer match. These are two great teams, representing two great soccer traditions.”
Having the opportunity to see two of the most prestigious football sides on the Yankee Stadium pitch was quite an attraction as the sellout crowd of 49,474 was the largest gathering to witness a soccer game in either Yankee Stadium.
The match between the world renowned sides was the second of the World Football Challenge matches held at the iconic sports venue in the Bronx this summer. Soccer’s premiere at the current Yankee Stadium took place on July 22, when the Chelsea F.C. and Paris St. Germain fought to a 1-1 draw. A very respectable crowd of 38,202 attended that contest.
Excitement grew as the day of the second game drew nearer. The two sides have been among the most prominent world football squads in history. Milan, now in its third century of existence, is one of the most decorated clubs in history. The club has been an 18-time winner of Italy’s Series A. It has captured the European Cup/UEFA Champions League Title in seven years, 1963, ‘69, ‘89, ‘90, ‘94, 2003 and ‘07.
Real holds a record nine wins of the European Cup beginning with five consecutive titles from 1956-60, ’66, ’98, 2000 and ’02. Within Spain, Real has been victorious a record 32 times. The club’s most recent season, 2011-12 was a banner year. It set marks for points, 100, goals scored, 121, difference in goals scored, +89, away wins, 16, and total wins (32).
The contest proved to be extremely one-sided to the delight of most of those in attendance as Real was victorious, 5-1. Although billed as a “friendly,” individual and club pride are always factors when professional athletes are in action.
One of the greatest current superstars of the sport, Christian Ronaldo, lived up to expectations as he scored two goals, During the 2011-12 season, the Portuguese forward scored 46 goals in 37 games in La Liga in Spain and netted 12 in 13 other appearances. Ronaldo remains the most costly transfer in world football history as Real Madrid paid $130 million to Manchester United to obtain his services.
The 27-year old received a standing ovation from the full house when he was removed from the contest with 10 minutes left. When asked why Ronaldo was given so many minutes, Madrid’s manager, Jose Morinho, replied, “It’s a historical stadium, a historical opponent, a full stadium. Christian is part of the show, what the people want to see.”
Another Real Madrid player in the spotlight was Kaká. The talented Brazilian assisted on two goals in the second half. The 30-year old was rumored to be returning to his previous club, Milan, for the new season. Marinho forthrightly expressed his opinion, “I’m happy to keep him and happy to sell if he wants to go. He’s a great player. My arms are open if he wants to stay.” To clubs interested in purchasing the services of Kaká, he warned, “If you want to buy a diamond, you have to pay.”
The nine games of the Herbalife World Football Challenge were played not only to heighten interest in soccer within the United States nor to fill the coffers of each club, but also to prepare each club for the fast approaching new season. Madrid open its season on August 18 and Milan opens on August 26.

Bird Brained Subway ‘Gunman’

Yanks Rub Out Mariners

By Howard Goldin
BRONX, NEW YORK, August 6- The Yankees captured the rubber game of the weekend series over Seattle with a 6-2 win on Sunday afternoon. It was the eighth time in the last 10 occasions that the Yankees successfully rebounded from a shutout loss with a victory.
Unlike the previous day’s contest, the game on Sunday hardly featured a pitching masterpiece. Both starters pitched five innings. Mariners’ starter Hisashi Iwamura gave up four runs on seven hits, two walks and a hit batsman. The Yankees scored a single run in four of his five innings on the mound.
The run in the fifth was scored on a solo home run by Raúl Ibañez, the homer was his 14th of 2012 and the major league leading 168th for the Yanks. The team is currently on pace to shatter its single season mark of 244, set in 2009.
In the following frame, Ibañez came to bat with two out and the bases loaded. The veteran drove in two runners with a single.
In addition to Ibañez, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano and Chris Stewart each twice hit successfully.
Jeter raised his career hit total to 3,228, 24 hits below Napoleon Lajoie. He scored his 1,830th run in the first, which tied him with Frank Robinson for 14th place.
Cano has hit safely in 33 of his last 27 games. He and Jeter began the game with identical team leading batting averages of
.313.
Suzuki’s double in the seventh raised his consecutive game hitting streak to 12. He also tied Don Slaught for the longest hitting streak at the start of a Yankee career. It also is the longest Yankees hitting streak in which a player had exactly one hit in each game.
Freddy Garcia pitched the requisite five innings to qualify for the win. The victory ended his three-game losing streak. The 35-year-old hurler recorded his 150th career win, a high for pitchers born in Venezuela. Garcia ranks 12th in wins for all pitchers who were born in Latin America.
Of the accomplishment, Joe Girardi remarked, “It just goes to show how consistent he’s been.”
Garcia gave up five hits and two runs I his five frames. Girardi was quite pleased, “Freddy’s going to give you everything he’s got every time he goes out. That’s just what Freddy does. He keeps us in every game.”
The bullpen easily carried the remaining four innings, allowing only one baserunner in four innings.
The Yanks now embark on a seven game road trip, four games in Detroit and then three in Toronto. Girardi looked forward with hope, “We won a series leaving. Hopefully, this will get us on a good streak.”
